You will find that side fat is just like any other fat except that in men it's usually the last to go. To lose the fat it's a simple matter of burning more calories durring the day than what you consume. The running forum is a decent place for a question like this because running burns more calories per hour than almost any other activity. Depending on your speed and such, running burns about 1000 calories per hour which makes it quite a fat burner.
Step one: cut out all the junk food including soda, cookies, chips and anything like that.
Step two: Start running a little bit here and there. Maybe start with a mile or two at a time 3 times a week. Fat burning takes place at 18 minutes into aerobic activity so you'll need to do some b-ball or some other recreational activity while you work on being able to maintain a 30 minute run.
Step Three: Start a muscle toning programm. Since you asked about the side fat I'm assuming that you are interested in some strength. You can get very skinny from running but if you want to not look like a skeleton then you'll need to do some pilates or at least push-ups and sit-ups and stretching.
That's about it. Just burn more calories than what you eat. Most people can accomplish that by just not eating the junk. cut that stuff out and you should see that side fat of your start to melt away.
A side note: You cannot target reduce fat. Fat is fat and it all gets burned the same way. If you've got a fat belly then situps are going to work just as well as bicep curls or calf raises as long as you can maintain it for enough time.
Good luck.

Excellent advice and so true - it's the last to go and you can't target fat loss. I just had my body fat composition taken and it's all in the middle that I have left.

hehe At the moment I can only only run 12 minutes before I collaspe. I then proceed to stagger to my feet, walk for a minute and run again. I then repeat the cycle. hehe does that mean I am burning very little fat??

Ha. You just have to keep moving for a half an hour. Running is great, but if you can't finish then just walk for 45 minutes. You'll be suprised how much that will help build up your tolerance. Also, do some other activity on the days you aren't running. Maybe bike or shoot baskets. That sort of thing will help.
Bottom line: Keep moving. Gotta keep moving. Keep it up for 30-45 minutes of any sort of movement and you'll be burning fat.

As I round into my prime years, this area is really what I'm noticing is the biggest change. I eat way less(and exercise less) and you know what is accumulating right in the middle.
It's good advice to burn more that you take in. There just is no other way.

Just keep trying. Run for ten, walk for 10, and run 10 again When I started jogging, I could barely manage a mile. After a few years hanging on a 5 miles run with a smile, I decided to push again. Within weeks I managed a 16 miles run. You body will adapt to running very fast, as long as you try a bit harder every day, and there's no need to go as far as you collapse to achieve progress. Might feel like puking the first 10 min, just go easy, mind your shins, concentrate on your breathing, and enjoy jogging development

lol, okay guys cheers. I do enjoy the runs, they feel great. i jog along the beach early morning when the sun is rising so its just me, the beach and God
I'd smoked for years so to be honest at this stage my lungs give up before my muscles do but when I started I couldn't manage 3 minutes of running. My goal is bout 45 minutes so it feels Soooooooooo fantastic to be increasing my fitness. I know 12 mins might not seem like a lot to people here but to me its one of the best things I've ever done for myself.

I know how you feel, I smoked for 15 years. It's been a few since I quit. Trust me, jogging DOES getr better and easier with practice. And if you got such a nice scenary, it's gotta help... All I have is the Black Country

I started running 2 weeks ago. The first time I started, I stopped after 5 minutes because my lungs were hurting and had to walk back. That felt discouraging. Then after that I was able to run 20 minutes untill today. I'm kind of confused... do I *only* burn fat after 30 minutes or do I still burn fat even after running 20 minutes? I aslo do situps before and after.

After 30 minutes (Approx!!) you'll start burning 'stored fats'...but think of it like this..for those first 20-30 minutes that your running you are still burning off those calories that you've consumed today. Had you not gone running these would be turned into stored fats and hey presto...you have a cycle going on
...No running=stored fats=less able to run=more stored fats=less able to run.

Try running 1 minute, walking 2 minutes, and repeat for 30 mins...then build up. Run 2 mins, walk 1 min, until you can build yourself up to continuous jogging. It will take a while, but if you have the determination, it will pay off. This (I'm told) is a more effective way of building up your running skills. Either way, it will take a while till you can run consistantly for a long period of time. Hope this helps!

aha!
now this explains alot. i was doing about 20 mins of excersise a day (not including walking etc) but concentrated on a cycle machine & jump rope. I tried to do 10 km on the machine a day even if i was using dumbbells & 10 mins of jump rope.
now i notcied that the wieght was not falling off at a huge rate (even with eating correctly etc) and thought "damn & bother and buggery it's not wroking!". however it has. i had just forgotten to look at my belly
i've read the above posts and they are truly informative and fascinating yet i find that my simple way of doing things seems to be working for me! now i know i should be doing 30 mins a day but if my 20 are working for me can i not just leave it at that?
i mean hell the beast that was my belly has reduced dramatically in size? mad? mad! and i didn't even notice . . . probly should stop hittin the whiskey when excersising eh1
