how far does a typical marathon runner run in a single run, or maybe a single day? 30-60 miles?

Somebody else will be able to tell you better than I can, but I know that they don't run the full length of a marathon when they train. They might every once in a while, but normally they run shorter intervals. In any kind of race, no matter what the distance, the best way to train is to break it up into intervals and set a target time that will be slightly faster than your racing speed. So if you were running a 10k, you might break it up into 2.5k intervals and run slightly faster than you would in the 10k.

While i was on the track team we ran 6 miles, no stopping for practice, but thats not actually what the seniors did, they ran 10 miles, they had it divided up into 3 parts, faster slower etc.

The longest training run for an intermediate level marathoner is 20 to 22 miles. He or she will run that distance 1 to 3 times in the weeks leading up to the race. The longest weeks of training will be between 43 and 48 miles, spread over 5 days. E.g., a 5 miler, 8 miler, 4 miler, 5 miler and 21 miler. Hal Higdon has a free web site that has 4 different training plans for marathoners, based on level of experience. BTW, the site has training plans for almost every length of race, other than ultramarathon.

i'm not a fan of runs over like 15 miles, breaks down the body too much and i also dislike regimented training plans. i have no justification for saying they're a bad idea because if you're serious they're totally important but i just feel like my freedom's taken away if i have a log that says you have to do this at his time.

my longest week in a marathon programm was 85 miles with the longest run being 1/4 the weekly totall (or almost in my case). My longest was 20 miles three weeks before the marathon and the last run before going into the taper.

The elite guys run over 100 miles a week, and most recreational marathoners do between 45-65. the more mileage you do durring the week, the less stress the long run puts on your body. You don't want to run 30 miles with 20 of that comming in one run. You want to split up the miles as much as you can (two a days) and then run a long one on the weekend. If it's not a greater ration than 4:1 then your body will handle the long run just fine.

i'm a marathon runner and i do roughly 40 miles a week. probably will bump it back up to like 60 once it gets near when i am going to run another marathon again.
