3 questions
I just brought 2 new pair of shoes to replace my old NB 702's (really old), I had been running in the old ones of and one for almost 5 years. Inconsistently, as in like once a year. I just started again but now I'm very serious. I replaced the shoes because they (1) were old as hell, were causing me shin pain. I got two new pairs of shoes- NB 800's and Mizuno wave Percision 8's. I have not yet used the NBs because they are trail shoes that i was replacing the 702's with and thery are really not meant for the street. the Mizunos feel great but oddly i would rater be wearing my old NBs simply because the Mizunos hurt to run in, the pain is unreal i'm not sure if it's the fact that i'm adjusting to the new shoes of if the shoes are prompting me to run faster and burn out quicker. before i switched i could run 7 mi with no problem, now 3 mi is a struggle. i don't understand. so here's the three:
(1) are the shoes making me go fastest unintentionally?
(2) how long does it take to adjust to new shoes?
(3) I'm running a 5k in two weeks, should i run in my old shoes?

1) Do you time your runs - are you actually even running faster?
2) Shoes - even when brand new - shouldn't ever hurt. I overpronate and like motion control, so I run Wave Alchemy - are your 800's and Mizuno's even recommended for the same runner? There's alot of variation in shoes; if you get the wrong kind, they may end up being pretty painful.
3) I wouldn't wear shoes I was un-used to in a race; I won't even run outside in new shoes until I've done a few medium-length runs on a treadmill - I want to know if we're going to have problems on mile 3 while my old shoes and car are only a few feet away. But I can't image running in shoes that were 5 years old - there'd have to be no support left in them.

the nb 800 are for trail running and are neutral as are the precisions. I'm neutral i think the old shoes were just so wrong that i got used to them... i'll take you old advice and wear them in the 5k. they are in okay shape. i really didn't use them in all that time. they were trail runners as well.

Do you like the Nike+? I'm an AppleFanBoy, but haven't tried it. Some reviewers said that the Nike numbers were pretty far removed from what a GPS receiver said, but I have personal doubts about a gadget-blog writer's abililty to really test out exercise gear.

nike+
I would very highly recommend it. the numbers are consistent (may not be accurate) and the voice response is priceless. trust me. if you don't like it you could always get rid of it easy. i love it to death. there is no subsitute. you can even load your info on to the nike site and compare them with others and join challenges. GET IT! REALLY! if you don't like wearing nikes order a "runaway", it clips on to your shoe laces to hold the transmitter
