Default Socks

I made the jump from crap shoes a little while back, I'm using Asics Gel Nimbus 8 now. I'll probably splurge a bit more next time I need shoes, the more I get into running

And now I notice that these cheap hanes ankle socks aren't doing it for me. In a long run, I'll find that they'll adjust position, move around, or slightly bunch up or crease in spots underneath my feet. If I ignore it (not wanting to stop and take my shoe off), within a mile or two my foot can get a numbing feeling on the bottom. If I stop, take off the shoe, readjust, and keep going, the numbing goes away, but can return within a mile or two..

So I was thinking that upgrading my socks could fix the solution, unless it may be something else. What do you runners use? I'm thinking something that's going to be tighter fitting, maybe non-cotton. I've never had or shopped for this before so recommendations are appreciated!

And if it makes a difference
I generally run on a track, sometimes on a road, and even less likely off-road. I generally steer away from treadmills, but come this winter I may find it the only option.

I'm working on going long distance. I've never raced, I just run for myself--but maybe I will work toward a marathon someday. The track I've been running on is 4 laps = 1.5 miles, and every couple of weeks I've added 4 laps to my run. I'm up to 9 miles as of yesterday. (Not that I'm running that fast! )

I use socks from the sport shop for runners/cyclist. No brand in particular, but they have an extra elastic part accross the foot which stops them shifting around when jogging. I used to job mid marathon distance, and they did well enough for a couple hours jog without having to shift them.

Cotton is breathable fabric so get 100%cotton, it should stop your feet feeling all clogged up and trapped also getting thick ones should pad your feet more so less chance of getting sore!
and if neither of that works then get suspenders to hold em up always works for us girls

I've gone through a variety of socks, and usually could find something to dislike about most of them - you'd think that by now, manufacters and designers would have worked the kinks out, but no. Some of the more expensive socks (thor-lo, exotic mesh patterns, whatever) worked fine for me, but I just don't have it in myself to spend $10 for a pair of socks. I decided that all I really needed was something fitted to the foot (like Joe said - elastic over the arch), low-rise/no-show (I like the style, YMMV), thicker on the sole (extra padding = good), and able to wash with regular clothes (a number of the more exotic socks need fabric softener, which I don't really like, so it just made my laundy more complex).

Short version: adidas low-rise, 3 pairs for $10 (or just buy a ton when they go on sale).

Don't use cheap socks for long distance runs or your feet will give you tons of complaints. Get good quality running socks from a running store. Tell them your problem and they'll help you out with the right kind of sock for your particular needs.

Thanks for the replies! I'll see where I can shop around out here, but I'll probably have to be looking online
