What web sites do you all recommend for online purchasing of shoes?

Shoes are one of the things that I would never buy online. You should research online to see what you think would be good and then go to the stores and try them on. there are just too many variables.
On another note, saw this on bodybuilding.com:

I had problems with my feet and running and in the end what I discovered about shoes (after much trial and error) is that the brands are irrelevant. Nike vs Reebok vs Whoever. It doesn't matter. Just find a pair of shoes that make your feet feel good. Everyone's feet are so different the shoe manufacturers make shoes that try and conform the the "average foot" but there is no such thing so the shoes are generic. I have no loyalty to any brand. I just wear a shoe that works and if it keeps working then I try and replace it with the same brand, but of course they change them or re-design them in slight ways ever couple of years so there is no guarantee your shoes will be the same even if the brand and the shoe model is the same.

I totally agree with that. The web is useful to look for possible shoes that fit what you need them for, but I would never buy any shoes, ski boots, etc... online even if they are better prices.
A friend of mine buys his shoes online and always complains very soon afterwards that he has to get a better fitting shoe or ski boot...

I ended up buying the Asics Gel-Cumulus 9...
Through talking with the shoe salesperson I found that the Nike Shox are not designed nearly as well as other "true" running shoes because the Shox system actually puts your foot in an unnatural position. They do a great job absorbing the heal impact, but they do not allow a fluid roll from heal to toe and they put some stress on the ball of the foot.
In comparison, he said the Asics I was trying on have gel in both the heal and ball of foot area and allow the foot to roll the way the body intended. I have since put some mileage on them and have found them to be a very comfortable shoe. They are very light and have kept my feet from hurting.
For people who do live by Nike he also mentioned that the Nike Free is what he would recommend for a running shoe. They are very similar to more common running shoes in their shape and lightness.

check out the Vibram Five Fingers. They are supposed to simulate bare foot running. I have a pair that I love, but people seem to be sharply divided on them.

don't run in vibram five fingers! you'll end up with too much impact on your joints and soft tissue. nike free's are good if you work them into your runs like once a week at first until you're feet get stronger. they are not a performance shoe! don't use them for races of any distance!
my favorite thing to do is find a really great shoe at a running specialty store and then get it online at the end of the season for real cheap. i have only had one shoe that wasn't a nike and that was the asics cumulus as a distance trainer and it didn't work out for me that well. now i use the nike pegasus as an everyday trainer, the nike miler for speed work and race pace distance runs, and the nike marathoner for races. the marathoner actually isn't that great a race shoe, my pr was in sf with the air zoom swift vapor which you can still find on ebay once in a while and i have like three pairs kicking around. these are really minimal, low support shoes, though, so you have to be pretty light and efficient to get a lot out of them.
