Let's talk gardening!
So what are you all growing? Being in a family where they grew stuff all my life to me it is normal but apparently it's a new trend now for some, over the past 10 years with all the hgtv stations and shows/expos.
Now we are not my DAD or Uncles and my mom was my dads helper so her knowlege is not as broad and she is 75 so she gets out there more to self please than anything - when she is 'with it' enough.
We (mainly my guy) have planted this year (not including what we already have nor flowers, just newly planted edibles):
-Onions both the regular and some clump ones
-tomatoes of course, we are mediteranean although cannot find the yellow ones and we usually use clones not seed for those, although we can try I guess
-beets
-carrots
-sweet/snow/snap peas
-butter lettuce
-I think a bitter lettuce of some sort like radicchio- not red
-rhubarb which I don't eat
-basil - again, the first did not take
-Italian parsley or flat leaf
- en salta which is an italian mixed green lettuces
I think thats it, we did look at some yellow zukes but don't think we got them.
We planted tons of other plants and flowers too or course and I know nothing....not when it comes to this whole plants deal, when, how, the moon, weeding - lost. But I do like to eat the fruits.
Our fig tree is suffering from our winter, our grapes too. Not sure about the plums or currants. The sage and rosemary seem fine, the different oreganos seem small but okay. The Bay leaf is a monster which is very hardy.
The Cherry trees - I dunno, they are old, been here over 30 or more years so the fruit is much less and the skunks/squirrels and other creatures seem to like the cherry bud, before it has a chance to grow and our trees are too big to net, we have to net part of our fig tree, we share with the creatures and let them have half the tree since its huge although now, not sure what will happen, its suffering a bit from the winter.
I don't think we bothered with string beans this year but our strawberries both the crawlers and small bush ones are great, but they are a petite breed, super sweet!
No potato this year....I think thats it!
Oh yeah, we have garlic and or chives and some celery flavored leafy plant not celery or celeriac but looks like big flat leaf parsley.
Linda

Wow!! Sounds like quite an extensive garden you've got there lady!!
I just started this vegetable gardening thing last year so I'm still learning the ropes so to speak. But it's really alot of fun to grow your own produce, and my kids love to putter about in the garden and learn about growing veggies and all too.
Now let's see.....what have I got planned this year?
-corn
-red onions
-garlic
-chives
-green onions
-cauliflower
-broccoli
-swiss chard
-zuchinni: green and yellow
-tomatoes
-canteloupe
-watermelon
-pumpkins
-spaghetti squash
I think that's everything for the veggies, lol!
I've got some flowers (annuals - they come back year after year) I will be planting from seed as well.....I just haven't decided where yet......I love flowers, big bold and bright!! Which does remind me.....I did plant some sunflowers as well....the big sundial kind that grow like 6ft + tall.....I adore those!! And they are awesome because they also give back to nature in that they feed the birds and smaller seed eating critters.
Oh wait......I just about forgot!! We've got a plum tree here at home, and at our trailer/farm we have all sorts of different apple trees that procude wonderful tasting apples. We also have crabapples as well as rhubarb.
We have raspberry bushes all over there and blackberrie as well. This year I planted a blueberry bush at home to see how that works out. I also have planted asparagus here at home and at my trailer so I should have a tonne of it next year!! There......I think that about covers it, lol!!

Nope...just the regular white caulifower. I tried growing it last year but didn't do so well at all. This year I've started the seeds early indoors so I'm hoping to get better results.
Nifty thing about the fancy cauliflowers is that they are cross bred with carrots for orange, broccoli for green, beets for red.....nifty, but odd, lol!!
I tried beets last year and didn't d so well either so I'm not doing them this year, lol!!
Lettuce......I should try that this year too....I did romaine last year but I was unclear how to pick it, lol!! So I wound up pulling all my plants up.....

My wife has the yard looking like better homes and garden magazine. I have no idea what half of it is but every Saturday morning I am reassured that she married me for my strong back and hole digging ability.
This morning it was 20 bags of manure at 40# each . . .
