Smile Rookie Q. What kind and brand of Protein best for a newbie? Plz Advice thx!

Hi,

This is my first time posting here. I am a newbie, just joined a gym nearby. I have some questions regarding post workout protein intake. Can I mix the protein power with water or skim milk BEFORE I got to the gym and drink it right after 1 hour of workout? or Do I have to mix the protein powder only if I intend to drink it soon? How long after my workout should I drink the protein for it to be most effective?

Also, can some of you recommend me some protein products for a beginner? Thx a lot guys for helping. I think I will learn a lot from this worderful site.

should have your whey in water post workout. some people do have it with a source of simple carbs as well. i dont think it is absolutely necessary. it does depend on your goals somewhat.

if you can stomach a shake before hand and not throw up while training then you can try that. if not then having a couple good meals already in your system..including complex carbs for energy...should be fine. if you're training in the morning then different things might have to be done...like sipping a simple carb/protein mixed shake while you train..or beforehand..etc.
anyways..after pwo you should consume your pwo meal within an hour or so...should include protein and complex carbs.. for replenishing..

you can mix protein in a liquid and not have to necessarily drink it right away..how long would you plan to keep it like that for? i'd put it in the fridge though if it's for over an hour or so.

as per brand...depends on you..can get some online or in the shops..just get a simple whey protein..a blend of concentrate usually..isolate is "cleaner"

Thanks for your detailed answer. I'm starting to make up my mind.

Do you think it's ok to drink the protein mix not at once but at times during the workout as I become thirsty? then once I got home I should drink the rest needed alone with a meal.

Aslo about the workout. I plan to run for 30mins every morning then do some strenth training after work. Do you think it's ok to workout twice, moring and afternoon? not over training? For my afternoon workout I usually tend to run for around 15 mins for warm up, is 15 mins too long for warm up or no warm up is needed?

I'm 24
5-10
around 170
goal is to drop the fat and gain muscle mass mainly around the upper and mid section. simple put to tone up a bit.

Thank you very much for the great advices.

Drink water during your workouts, save the protein drink for afterwards. Actually, you should be ingesting carbs and proteins post workout to replenish your glycogen stores and rebuild your muscles.

I have been using Designer Whey protein for about the last year. It is probably one of the better tasting ones that I have used
