Lakes are great! But I don't like fitness swimming in open water- the waves always get in my mouth. Those guys in the Ironman who do it in the Hawaiian ocean are beasts.

Open water any day. I go in the pool during the winter but it's mind-numbing. Stroke, stroke flip stroke stroke...You get the picture. However, I have found that my form falls apart in open water. Each has advantages and disadvantages but you can't beat the great outdoors!

there are pro's and con's for each... if you like chlorine, concrete and clear water you can't beat a pool... if you enjoy not seeing or knowing where the bottom is, murky water, and all kinds of aquatic lifeforms nibbling at your... then lake it is. I prefer water skiing myself, swimming in a pool, and hanging out at the beach... a little of both worlds can be a good thing, switch it up every now and then. enjoy!

I have done a LOT of swimming in pool. But I'm not very tough when it comes to lakes or ocean. And if I swim on a deep water where you can't see the bottom, its creapy to look down in the water.
It's strange I feel like quite a good swimmer in pool, but not out in the nature.

I find that training in a pool is much more enjoyable, for a variety of reasons. First of all, the temperature is consistent in a pool, whereas a lake can vary by the weather. Second, it is easy to measure distance in a pool. Third, pool water is clean and clear (if maintained properly). You never know what kind of nasty things have been dumped into a lake by the drunk guys last night.

Lake or Pool?
In the summer here the low water conditions can help increase the risk of micororganisms comming to call. So Pool.
If you want to throw in ocean, I'd pick that one.

Pool all the way. lakes or oceans are creepy, you don’t know how deep it is, and there’s underwater woorpools, or W/E there called. They can suck you in underwater...

I would definately say POOL. I dont like swimming in lakes. You might as well throw some water in a full garbage dumpster, then have some homeless guys deficate on you while you float around..........

Definately a lake. Not every lake is polluted with tons of crap, there are plenty clean lakes and ponds. Also, fish, turtles, anything else that may be in a lake won't be chasing you around or trying to bite you, so there's nothing to be afraid of in there.

While I find open water more refreshing, enjoyable and interesting, both work differently. For example, because of waves, obstacles and the correcting necessary open water swimming is best for longer, endurance swimming and i need a higher stroke; whereas pool's are great for sprints and working on form. Share your favourite open water swims, anyone?

i was in finland last summer and spent alot of my time swimming in lakes. it was foookin deadly. i used to like swimming in pools but the chlorine irritates the crap outta my skin hence i try to avoid. most lakes over here in ireland are kinda dirty at the mo and your not allowed swim in them because they are close to or on somebodies property. it sucks. but i would have to say lakes. i'll never forget all those beautiful lakes in finland. gorgeous country.
