Question open ocean swims

I am looking for resources on how to train for a 2.5 mile rough water swim, in the open ocean. I currently live in Honolulu, HI...any tips or leads would be appreciated?

Would that open ocean swim be for anything in particular... say, the ironman?
Not that I could tell you how to train. I only ever swam in pools. My "wingin' it" advice would be to get as much time in the water (inside or open) as possible. Practicing in open water could be difficult to do, logistically, on a regular basis. Be training good hard long didstance in a pool, then be sure to get occasional practice in the ocean, just so you aren't surprised come race day.
Good luck- you're a better man than I.

I would train in a pool until you have the endurance to take on the 2.5 with no problem. Then I would move to swimming in a lake (not too many in Hawaii, but there are a few), or perhaps parallel to the shoreline (familiarize yourself with the currents first, of course). In open water training, always swim with a buddy. Since you have good weather year round, you could really take advantage of the environment and hit the ocean every day. Good Luck!
