Breaststroke, but only because it's lazy and slow. :P
It's a good workout but, aside from that, is there any real use to swimming butterfly?

i do several lengths of freestyle(the front one) a week at my university
for exercise
as for butterfly, if done correctly (usually done wrong) it is supposedly the fastest stroke/style
and yes it is nice to look at =)

It's not about being useful, it's about being fun to swim or nice to see, but as kamu said, if done correctly it's the fastest style

Butterfly is beautiful to watch, just a shame I find it so damn hard to do myself. Freestyle (front crawl) has always been my favourite, though I always throw a few lengths of breast stroke and backstroke in there as well to add a little variety.

Every workout for me includes several different strokes to develop a well-balanced routine and thorough workout. I typically begin with freestyle and do an I.M. (i.e. butterfly, back, breast and free) and return to freestyle for sprints, etc. I also typically end with breaststroke as a form of cool down.

I like doing the frog splash and then the unicorn dive, and a breathstroke. ITs great.

I agree with the idea of variety because it also seems to me as though I tire too easily if I keep up doing one stroke for too long. Various others kind of allow me a breather and I regain my strength that way.

The butterfly is the hardest and takes the most energy. Freestyle is my favorite to swim. I guess that it is something about the smooth rhythm and controled breathing. Freestyle is the fastest not the butterfly. Check the Olympic records.

I don't know about the Olympic records, but I agree with Flints, the freestyle is the fastest way to swim (for me anyway). That is the style (front crawl) I use most, I'll do some breast stroke & back stroke for a change of pace. I've been swimming since I was 5 years old & haven't mastered the butterfly yet & at my age I doubt I ever will.

If I'm not mistaken:
This is the ranking of which is the fastes dispipline if you master each technique equal.
1. crawl
2. butterfly
3. backstroke
4. breaststroke
