1250 meters....
I just wanted to let you know I had made it up to 1250 meters on my new swimming program.
It hasn't been easy and I am sure I could use some professional pointers, but I'm getting a little better every week (swimming three times a week now) and am enjoying it.

I'm only at 300 myself, though I do a series of flat out lengths, so congratulations on your current total!
BTW is it better from a cardio perspective to swim many lengths slowly or fewer but faster?

Well, I swim 50 meters at a time and take a 10-15 second break. I try to keep my times consistant versus going hard and having to recover longer - my goal is to get to where I can go 100 meters before a break and so-on up until I can do 250 meters at a time with no breaks.
It takes me about 30 seconds to do 25 meters (7 breaths).

Managed 350 today, which is an improvement at least. Ack, I'll have to keep posting my total on here and hope the embaressment of being so far off the pace will drive me on. Did a mixture of free style and breast stroke, with one length of back stroke thrown in for variety.

Thank you! I actually hit a brick wall by overdoing it - I was training too much and started to suffer because of it. I'm taking it easy for a couple days - my small tri is in two weeks, so resting now so that I can build back up in time for the race.

Excellent, just ease back into it, don't overdo it. I tend to overdo it most times too, I just love pushing myself harder haha. I'm such a bully...to myself

Back in High School I used to average around 14,000 meters a day. 6,000 in the morning, and around 8,000 after school. Most of our sets were broken into 100s. 20 x 100 on the 1:30 was very typical ( this is in a 25 meter pool ). later in the season we had to do the same set but interval was stepped up to 1:20 and we had to hold them on the 1:12. Of course that was 10 years ago. and I haven't touched the water for 6 months, so I am sure a 50 would kick my A$$ right now. This thread makes me want to get back in the water though. I don't like thinking of my high school days as my prime.

Swimming is my favorite form of excersize. I use to swim a lot. My Ballies membership keeps going mainly so I can use the pool.
The most I would do was 3000 meters. After a while my shoulders would give me problems. So now I limit my swims to 30-45 minutes regardless of distance.
With my work load the past few years I haven't kept up very well but I am trying to pick it up again.
Swimming is still the best way to wake up in the morning for me.

I still swim quite a bit myself, i have many sets that work quite well. A good one to go distance is a ladder starting at 300 meters, and then 250 and so on, then at 100 climb back up to where you started! it helped me get my 500 to 5:58

VO2 Max improvement
FP-
My G/F was doing her first Tri last mo so we started swimming a few months ago and I am convinced my cycling has improved subsequently...
I am a competitive cyclist. The improvement to my VO2 max has been significant. I have increased my wattage during recent testing and I feel it was a result of swimming.
