June 16th Reputation Changes
Nothing seems to get more feedback on this site than the reputation system; from the configuration to the usage, it has to be the single most critical system we have on the site.
The rep system has always been intended as a tool for members to be able to prop (or remand) another member for their participation on the site. If you got enough props, you were promoted to Big Dog status and recgonized for your contributions to the site.
Over time the system was abused, mostly from circle-repping - the continous repping of a small group in an effort to boost each person in the groups overall level. A person might have 500 reps coming from just 5 people in a short amount of time; those reps gave that group an unfair advantage over others when it came to their 'rep power' (the rep points they could give or take from someone else).
In an effort to promote effective use of the rep system, I've made a dramatic change. I've made it so that only the last rep a person gives counts towards their total score. In other words, you can rep someone 100 times, but only the rep power you assign on the last one is actually added to their overall score. The only way to get a higher rep score is to have more members rep you.
You may be wondering what happened to your score; well, the system has been updated to count only unique members who have given you reputation - so the points you got from the same source have been condesnsed down to the last score those members gave you. People who got alot of rep from the same people will see the most dramatic loss of points. People who had rep from many users will see little changes in their overall score.
I've turned repping back on in all the forums; with this new system there is no reason to put users who use the Lounge as a primary posting place at a disadvantage.
I'll be looking at the actual scores needed for advancement; but this new system ensures fairness by giving everyone equal opportunity to advance by accepting reputation from various members around the site.
As always, your input was instrumental in setting up the new system; it was because of your feedback that I was able to come up with this idea and then put the appropriate code into place to change the behavior of the system provided.
Thank you and I hope this helps create a level playing field.

I understand the concerns of circle repping, and I know that there are a lot of us that rep each other. But that is because we like their information, humor, views, and insight. I have a real problem with the fact that my rep is only good one time.
I appreciate the fact that you do not want people just repping to make someone a Top Dog. But this is big. Could a new person even get enough reps to become a Big Dog?
I have always viewed the rep system as a way to let someone know that you appreciate what they have posted, and you throw them a little change for it. It is really fun to check in everyday and see what you have earned and watch your rep power build. Then we are able to help new members attain their status.
FP, I would really like to see things put back the way that they were. I know that this is your site and that you make the calls. But this is a hard one to stomach.
And please take this as my opinion and my feelings on this subject, don't hold it against me.
edit... this is how I feel right now, like I just got knocked out...

I appreciate turning the rep capabilities back on in all the forums, but I am flabbergasted that I have been reduced from over 2800 to 400 rep points. Funny, I thought I posted quality.
I was in a circle and I didn't even know it?????? So, who'll lend me some money:P and I'll see you in HELL, Darren
Call me narcissitic, but I, too, liked logging in to see who thought my post were funny, or one of my threads thought provoking.

Before this get messy, please read the following post.
It's not that long, it is farily funny, but it will shed some light on how to be a MAN; and bitching about the rep system is about as far from manly as you can get.

Oh, and thanks FP. I love the new rep system.

I gotta agree with Luke, tim and blue.. the reps are really what keeps the moral high around here.. In our everyday hassle of work and trying to get by, this was the one thing that most people looked forward to, to see that they are appriciated by their peers. Alot of US, have "grown close", so to speak and rely on each others input, (reps), to let us know it.

what's circle repping? doesn't it cause blindness or hairy palms...I just post what I want to post and rep who I want to rep...did not realize how political this place was getting...wow...from nearly 5000 to 673....11 greenies to 6 greenies....stop repping me, I may disappear...guess they never read my famous garlic post....kind of takes the fun out of it...oh well....better log off and go back to work....

Keep in mind you can still rep each other and send notes; those don't go away - its just the points that get assigned that don't accumulate with each re-vote that has changed.

I support this change wholeheartedly. I may have lost thousands of rep points, but I still have my penis, so I can't complain.

From what I have heard about your penis, I'd really be complaining.

Considering all my rep (now cut by 75%) comes from the same small group of people I've taken a bigger cut then most on this site. I think luke is correct, while I agree this circle repping stuff is certainly a problem, I think it unfairly hurts a lot of members who post a lot of good stuff that the same people find rep-worthy, if you follow that.
On the other hand, considering I never really gave a rat's a** about the rep system in the first place and have never really paid much attention to it I could hardly care less if I was hit by one of greg's sausage girls. I just think this change may cause more problems then it solves.
Did I just agree with luke on something? Oh god....I need to sit down.....

good change, and a logical one. and nothing personal; it does level the field a lot.
and I like mave's outlook. and raijin's, for whom i have a lot of respect
It's "Approval" or "Disapproval", with a modest reward.

I agree with several of the points presented. Personally, I use reps to tell people that I really like what they posted and I try to include a personal message. But, if the Big Guy wants to change the system, it's his perogative to do so and I'll abide by it (ever hear of the benevolent dictatorship?? ). I noticed the change earlier today and read FP's initial post. I didn't really think about it much more until I just noticed that the rep points are yoyo-ing all over the place. I've actually recovered and am now substantially higher than I was at the beginning of the day......

Kinda like being back in high school I guess...a cliche...a gang....
I did realize that there were a certian number of folks who enjoy my twisted sense of humor more so than others....and showed appreciation by repping.... on the same hand there are certian foks who I rep on a regular basis because I find them to typically be more humorous or to closer share my opinions.....I don't feel that I rep the same folks to just get reps back though...no honor in that...
So I assume that I will stay in the same circle and continue to give pointless reps...
I hope that doesn't make me a bad person....
human nature dictates that humans to seek out and band with their own type... but however the EF Gods see fit to set this playground up is fine with me....I'll still come and play....and know my circle enjoys my company!!

Wow... Everytime there is a 'rep' change we see some drama something like this...
I could really care less about my rep points/power....
I present this question to all of you 'dogs' who are pissed by this new system....
Are you here just to build up 'rep' points....? I never really worried about them, but evidently they are a big source of debate for most members here. I will plus rep a post I like, and usually the only ones I neg are ones that totally disregard the forum rules or proper ettiquite...
Fuck, I cant believe all this hoopla lately... If you are here just to get "reps" then maybe you are not here for the right reasons, and shouldn't be here at all...
