Forum sections
It happens just a little too quick IMHO that threads get closed for some reason or another. Not everybody likes that. Certainly not the guys that put alot of effort into their posts. And I'm not even speaking of threads that vanish all of a sudden. I'm not judging anything, just noticing their disappearence because the link in the E-mail I get isn't working anymore. So each time I think by myself: "Ooops there goes another one".
And believe me I am curious to know what was going on in that disappeared thread. Most of the time I even didn't have a chance to post something in the thread that disappeared.
Now I don't know exactly if this is possible here at EF, but recently in another forum, I saw these subsections that were labelled as follow:
"Conversation Lounge" (Forum for members to discuss anything)
***This Forum is not moderated to the full extent. Use at your own risk. Do not enter if easily offended***
"Behind Closed Doors" (Here you can discuss what goes on when the lights are turned out in the bedroom at night. Lets see what you got)
***By entering this forum, you agree that you are at least 18 years old***
By entering that Conversation Lounge, I thought that there would be some serious fight going on in there. I was surprised however how civilised everything remained in there.
But again I'm not sure this would be possible here at EF.

Plover,
I personally don't think that is a bad idea, with one exception and that would be that before a member could enter they should have either status or a certain amount of posts? Just my two cents

I agree, minimum Dog, around 500 posts and a minimum of 1 year membership would be a good idea.
But I still don't think Mod's like to leave some sections to the lions so to speak.
If not-fully moderated discussions sections seem to work in other forums; they should normally work here too. Now too many discussions threads get closed to protect some members.
Now if someone should enter such discussion sections, he's been warned and shouldn't have a reason to whine anymore.
These is all just an idea of me of course.

SOME threads are closed because their main objective seems to be to humiliate another rather than usher in a discourse of differing perspectives/opinions. When respect is sacrificed in lieu of sparkling, derogatory posts with a smart-ass shelf-life of a chuckle, then the thread is moot, and no longer relevent for me to post in.

The direction a thread is evolving depends on the posters themselves. The posters themselves showing no respect can be ignored in such threads.
I think that by closing they get the impression that they won. I agree there are limits.
That's why ''some" moderation is still necessary. But by entering those threads the person is at least warned that the thread is "less" moderated.
Consider it as the kind of threads we have still going on around here, but where the after each post are left out.

Exactly. I expect people to be civil to one another. Don't whine to me when I shut something down because of boorish behavior. Disagreeing is one matter, humiliating one another is quite another. I have very little tolerance for smack talk. I try to treat people well, and make them feel welcome. Cross the line, and expect to get run over.

Ye GG, but it would be the kind of anarchy that would be contained in one section and you would enter it at your own risk. Of course it would take some power OFF of a moderator(s). I think that's what it's all about. I agree we can't let that happen here at EF. That's why I mentioned the quasi impossibility such a thing would happen here. Maybe it was a foolish idea of me. The end. Case closed.

Well, maybe I should give you guys a link t/t forum I was talking about in my first post; so you can judge 4 yourselves. I checked it once again and with the exeption of the normal MF and ... it's all quite reasonable converstion you can find in it.
Now b4 I put a link here to another forum that deals with somewhat similar stuff as this one; I need a formal approvement of a mod.
Out of respect of this forum I won't do it without that approvement. So if a mod passes by here once more he can give his go ahead. I'm not gonna botter annoying a mod with a PM. I guess I give them too much work already.

I'm not really inclined to want a "anything goes" forum on this site - I have one on another forum and I can tell you that you that it gets messy. I've always said that I wanted EF to be different from the "other" sites that are filled with smack talk; I just don't see why having a forum here for that is necessary. We have the BD Lounge which I would think is less strict than the Lounge simply because of its membership.
That's not to say that I don't think people should have fun here; I just would like to to be within reason. To me that means expressing yourself colorfully is one thing, calling someone else a MF is something else.
I've been known to get angry myself and post some colorful language; but I'd like to think its the exception and not the rule. I rely on the "Mooderators" to determine where the line is and take the actions they feel are needed to keep the spirit of the forum in check.
