Grey Reps?
Hey what is the deal with these? My rep count went down after someone gave me a rep (which was positive). I asked the individual if it was a negative one by mistake and they said it wasn't. A bunch of mine are 'grey'. Can someone explain this? And also explain why my reps went down? I was at like 231 and went to 226. I also have gotten reps where my rep counter hasn't moved at all?

I guess this is a related question, but I guess I still don't quite understand the "rep" thing. I see Jarhead's "Rep Power" is a "6" with three little blue bars next to it. But I don't know how this is related to the description of his reps being "231" and "226" How's that work?

Rep points are a cumulation of the rep score each user has given you (you only get one score per users, so multi repping doesn't increase your score). I think grey means their rep score didn't count although you got the rep comment (I believe we limit rep scores to those with more than 20 posts and 30 days on the site, something like that).

Forgive my continued stupidity, but I see in my profile that I have 133 points. But how are these awarded? For example, I have clicked on the "Add to Reputation" icon and sent a message when I really liked a person's post. I assume this is how they receive points, but is it 1 point each time someone does this or is there a way to add or subtract a certain number of points?
Also, where are these "gray" points/reps? I don't see them!
Thanks for putting up with my newbie questions!!!

If someone reps you more than once, their latest rep to you is a blue rep point. All the other previous rep points are gray.

Underneath each member's name, etc
<<<----- over there
you should see "rep power" (should say 20 for me)
If I approve of your post, 20 points gets added to your total.
The more points you accumulate, the more your power goes up.
As FitnessPhotos said, if I Approve of another post of yours, the first 20 points gets wiped out and replacement 20 gets added.
If I weren't me, but someone else who's working his/her way up the ranks, you'd get however many points I had when I approved, but if I get more points and approve something later, the first handful of points gets removed and my new "power" gets added.
Does that help?

Well I don't think that is the case. I mean pliny was the one who repped me and he has like a zilllion posts. Also why did my 'reps' go down? This is just whacked. I mean it isn't that big of a deal but I know some people like to track this.

if somebody neg repped you the dot would be orange instead of blue or gray, blue means the rep counted and gray means the there was no value added to your total rep points.
I'm not sure why your reps points would go down unless somebody neg reps you, but if there's no orange dot in your rep comments, then no one negged you

FitnessPhotos made a lot of tweaks to the standard vBulletin software to devise a system that works here on this site, the way he envisions it to work.
Periodically the software gets updated/revised, and it sometimes realigns the so-called rep system to "the standard". It might go unnoticed for days, sometimes many days, before he can get to making the readjustments.
In the meantime, it's possible that you got bonus points from a more-recent Approval from someone with lots of points go give. Specifically, the points here are capped at a particular level (whatever FP decides is appropriate) but perhaps the software upgrade overwrote the caps. Then, when he got around to re-tweaking all of the changes back to his way of running his site, those bonus points got reset to where they should have been.
In your own words, "it isn't that big of a deal"

Thanks for all the responses. In my world it is a dead issue unless someone else has anything. Thanks again for the responses!

That's cute. One other possibility comes to my accountant's mind. If someone who has already repped you once, and who has lost rep points since then, reps you again, like someone said above, their OLD power is subtracted from your total and their NEW power is added back, thereby reducing your total. This may be a bit far fetched, I know, but it's a possibility.
