Confused over glutes
Lunges and squats are suppose to be the best for firming butt and thighs.
So why is it also the same exericises women do to give them a bigger booty?
Am I slimming or bulding muscles when I do them?
Very confused-

you are building muscle, which is key to "firming." Fat jiggles, muscle doesn't. So to "firm" booty, you must 1) lose fat (by diet, not targeted exercises- doesn't work that way) and 2) build muscle by exercising (lunges, squats, etc). The only "slimming" you are accomplishing through lunges etc. is the overall calorie burn that comes from getting your heart rate up doing the exercises... and this calorie burn is spread out to the entire body, not concentrated in the booty/hamstrings.
I like your name. "me too"

yep! Tellico is awesome! The only thing i have to add is that you also curn more calories the more muscle you have! and dont worry, there is pretty much no way you can get your bum to be oversized with weight training without doing extreme heavy weight, and have been training for 30 million years (not literally) or using some sort of growth hormone. Same with every other body part!! so dont think you're going to wake up one morning with a big bum :P
if you're not used to doing squats and lunges and you give your glutes a bit of a shock, sometimes they will go AAH and hold more water than usual to protect itself from the beating you just gave it, so thers a chance that it might look a little bit worse for the first week, but will be more awesome than ever once it settles. when you get bum pump you'll find your bum wobbles less and your bum looks higher and you have less line where it joined! it will get you addicted to lunges ^_^

Don't worry, muscles only grow when you are eating surplus calories If you are on a calorie defecit from dieting it's impossible to build bigger muscles.

Thanks for the information,
btw-anything wrong with doing lunges everyday? I'm thinking the muscles won't have time to recuperate and get bigger...and I won't be so sore.
I'm also running 3-4 milles a day for cardio.

I wouldn't do them everyday, every other day is perfectly fine though. I do full body workouts on a one day one, one day off basis. Works very well

They are one in the same. You will be building if you are in a caloirc excess, or "slimming" if your in a caloric defecit.
they are the best for firming, becasue friming implies muscle!

no if your legs or bum is getting bigger that means that you are eating more calories than you are burning. Laying off the lunges wont fix that! nstead of gaining muscles you will just gain fat. If you want your skirt to be less tight then you're going to have to lessen the calories

Squats are great to build up the ass that you will have when you drop the fat off......but muscle with a layer of fat is when your booty looks bigger.
I would concentrate on fat loss for now with cardio and then you can always build up muscle as you see fit once you lean down more.......I think according to your logic you will feel better if you see size go down first but you will then notice, once you melt the fat off the butt and legs which can take a while depending on how far you have to go and how much you do to toward this...........you will then see its flabby and needs muscle for the shaping.
Of course you can always lift lighter and do more reps to avoid getting too much muscle.

Italianangel just skated over the issue, but there is a psychology here that we're not addressing.
You would help yourself more if you stop worrying about skirt size and look at overall body image.
I train a couple of female volleyball players. They are a size 6-10, depending simply due to muscle. There is nothing wrong with that, at all!
Look at proportion. Listen to the wealth of knowledge the previous posters have offered, and pratice portion control.

Girls, if you start insisting on a healthy, fit body, scoiety will fall in line. I know I will!

From my understanding ( and I'm not in any way an expert just voicing my opinion)... You are actually doing both, slimming and building muscle (becuase muscle also helps to burn fat). To be honest I didn't have a booty until I started doing squats, but depending on how your body is shaped and on genetics it could be different for you. If you have some fat around that area and you are not burning fat your bum will probably get bigger becuase the muscle being built will perk up and push up the fat, but if you are getting rid of the fat with cardio you will mostly just see the muscle, making you have a firm booty. I'm sure I'm not saying something right but it makes sense to me somehow... Then again if you are slim and start building muscle it just proportions your body a little better, which I think is what happened in my case... It's nice to have a booty anyway, either way you go... hehehe Good luck with whichever you are trying to go for!

another exercise you might want to try if you are focusing on "the booty" is the straight leg dead lift. It really targets the hams and glutes, alos good for the traps and back.
