Rather, they've earned every ounce of esteem thanks to the quality of their innovations. Because of Mavic, the rims and wheels we ride on are completely different and wholly superior to anything we might have previously imagined. While their accomplishments are too numerous to list, their most noteworthy breakthroughs have an easy familiarity to all of us. The SUP and UB Control technologies they pioneered in the early 90's gave a quantum boost to rim strength and brought us the glory of the machined braking surface. The Helium wheelset in the late 90's was the industry's first "climbing" wheelset, and they proved so durable that their unforgettable red anodized rims and hubshells are still a common sight on group rides today. The Cosmic Carbone was the first noteworthy aero wheelset, and in its current iteration is still the most widely used deep-dish wheel in the professional peloton. With the introduction of the Open Pro rim a few years ago, Mavic set a new standard for the strength and lightness we expect out of conventional box-section rims thanks to their Maxtal aluminum alloy composition. While other brands certainly offer excellent options in their own right, more often than not the wheels you see are derivatives of products Mavic has already perfected. The Mavic Ksyrium SL SSC is the finest all-around wheelset money can buy. At 1500g for a set of clinchers, they are light by any standard. The all-silver 2004 rim camouflages these machined sections on the rim, and in our estimation makes them look cleaner than ever. The other change for 2004 is in the front hub. Instead of the aluminum hub shell of previous years, it's a silver-painted carbon fiber composite shell, lightening the front wheel. What won�t be changing, though, is the extent to which you�ll see the SL used in the professional peloton. When the roads get especially rough and the hills get long, you'll see SL's all over the place. And keep in mind that no other wheel brand has technology like Mavic's UB Control and SUP treatments. You'll benefit from a perfectly machined braking surface and welded/machined rims, ensuring consistent and reliable day in and day out performance. The SL is available in clincher (1500g) and tubular (1480g). They have 18 spokes on the front, 20 spokes on the rear. The front spokes are radial, the rear spokes use Mavic�s Isopulse spoking concept, giving it superior stiffness and perfect spoke tension. Description: The Pinarello Prince is the frame that revolutionized the bike industry. Introduced in 1999, it was the first aluminum racing frame made with carbon fiber seatstays. The main triangle and chainstays are built with Pinarello Extreme tubing -- a custom-drawn variation of Deda SC 61.10A, a breathtakingly light aluminum alloy with an unrivaled record for durability. The CRS carbon fiber wishbone seatstays absorb road shock at the rear of the bike much in the same fashion that a carbon fork absorbs shock at the front wheel. Since its introduction, Pinarello's CRS design has been imitated industry-wide, but no other manufacturer has had five years of experience to refine this ever-evolving design. The Prince was also the first frame to use the now-ubiquitous 1-1/8" integrated headset. Does the Prince deliver? "....soaking up small bumps or major holes with an efficiency which is quite frankly astonishing. The main triangle is still made from a specially-drawn, extra-light, butted aluminum tubing from Easton named "Race 7000" -- a lighter version of the Easton Ultralight 7005 used in the Fuga in 2002. Description: If you've ever been lucky enough to do some hard riding on a monocoque carbon bike, you understand what a performance advantage it is to have a machine so single-mindedly designed to give you jet-like propulsion with every pedal stroke. Monocoque means no flex, no whippiness, no softness. Every watt of power you put into the pedals is rewarded. The only downside, of course, is that every ride isn't a race or an interval session. In fact, we'll go months at a time without turning a pedal in anger. We love the sheer pleasure of being outdoors on a bike, and the joy of an easy small-ring spin is close to our hearts. This is the sort of riding in which the muscularity of a monocoque bike can be a bit much. How might a frame manufacturer deal with this paradox -- most riders want super-stiffness in the summer, but silky smoothness in the winter? How can you load a bike up with qualities from one end of the spectrum without giving the other end the short shrift? Eddy Merckx has the answer. In fact he has multiple answers. With his 25th Anniversary Carbon AXM Merckx makes extensive use of titanium mesh in the carbon lay-up to give the frame a healthy dose of Ti's inherent shock absorbency. On the new-for-2005 Carbon 3XM he answers the riddle in a different fashion. With the 3XM Merckx gives you ample stiffness through the use of a monocoque carbon front triangle. The headtube and top tube of the 3XM utilize extensive flaring, shaping, and oversizing clearly intended to increase its resistance to front-end flex. Instead of sticking with a similar sort of monocoque rear triangle like you get on the AXM and MXM, though, the 3XM has a bonded-on full-carbon rear triangle. Compare the seatstay to what you see on the AXM and the 3XM. It's noticeably slimmer. giving the rear of the bike a calmness on rough roads a bit mellower than the calculated stiffness of a full-monocoque frame. The 3XM is a sweet balance of stiff-and-smooth, an ideal combination for the varying needs many of us have for our bikes over the course of the year. The Carbon 3XM is available in Clear Carbon with Silver decals. It's available in 5 sloping sizes between 41cm and 53cm. Scandium is well known for being the most forgiving aluminum alloy ever manufactured. Merckx makes it even more magical (and durable) by oversizing the tubes to impressive diameters. This combination of a shock-absorbing alloy with hefty tubing diameters makes the SC a wonder to ride. You might recall the dominance of Peter van Petegem when he won both the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix on his Lotto-Domo Team SC in an 8-day span in 2003 -- the first time in 23 years anyone has accomplished such a double. Johan Museeuw crushed the field in his solo breakaway victory in 2002 at Paris-Roubaix on his Team Domo-edition Team SC. It punctuated two huge landmarks in 2001 for the Team SC -- the 1-2-3 finish for Team Domo in the 2001 Paris-Roubaix, and the legendary performance of Team Domo's Richard Virenque in the Paris-Tours World Cup race in October, 2001. He was victorious in a 243km breakaway, in what was essentially a 7-hour time trial. The Team SC has more a race pedigree than any other frame we sell, irrespective of brand. If you want a frame that symbolizes the beauty and the romance of top-flight Euro-dog road racing, the Team SC is for you. The Team SC has been our single best-selling aluminum alloy frame for the last three years. Why? Rather than waxing poetic myself, let me quote the former World Champion, Hour Record holder, and wearer of the Maillot Jaune Chris Boardman. In his capacity as test pilot for Pro Cycling magazine, he reviewed the Team SC in their September 2003 issue and wrote... "....its overall robustness leads me to suspect it will last longer than its rider. It could probably survive a nuclear blast, or the non-fission equivalent, Paris-Roubaix..... The handling was as good as any bike I have ridden, perfectly neutral, and even sitting up to put a cape over the top of the climb at low speeds was no problem. I was perfectly in control on the most taxing Alpine descent and would have been happy to ride this bike across the roughest of cobbled roads (which I suspect was its intended target terrain). The substantial design also gave a solid feel with little in the way of flex evident. The bike didn't feel as if it would bounce over rough ground, rather it would plough through it!" When comparing the Team SC to other bikes, take a good long look at the tubesets of the bikes you're comparing it to. The Merckx is made from a Scandium alloy, as indicated by its SC7000 tubing designation. We often get requests to compare the ride of the Team SC to bikes made from Dedacciai SC61.10a tubing. People look at the "SC" there and assume that Dedacciai is manufacturing Scandium tubesets not unlike Easton's. In fact, SC61.10a is not Scandium. Rather, it's a lightweight aluminum alloy containing not one whit of Scandium. It's a perfectly good tubeset, and we sell lots of bikes that use it. But no alloy tubing provides the same silky ride on rough roads as true Scandium. There's a difference, and you'll notice it on your first ride! One other note -- in previous versions of the Team SC, Merckx built the bikes with "carbon-wrapped" chainstays. The carbon had little structural bearing on the bike, and it didn't do much to the ride quality of the bike either. It was mostly done for cosmetic reasons, and halfway through the 2004 season Merckx made the decision to do away with the carbon wrap. As such, you'll see nothing but full-SC7000 chainstays on a new Team SC. The Team SC will be available in the Red, White, and Blue colors of Lotto-Domo, and in Orange/Blue.
