Description: The M5 Carbon is a landmark shoe for Carnac. They've completely re-thought their shoe design and construction -- literally from front to back, top to bottom. The first time you hold an M5 in your hand and put it on your foot you'll be amazed foremost by its lightness. In the past, Carnacs have always been a bit on the heavy side. We've long been believers here that your shoe is a piece of equipment just like a crankset or a seatpost -- weight is an equally important matter with your shoe. The MFC5 White Carbon sole used on the M5 Carbon is completely new for Carnac, and it's a primary reason why it weighs in at a feathery 285g. One other upside to the MFC5 is that it disposes of the need for cleat adapters. This further saves weight, and it lets you feel closer than ever to your pedals, while giving you absolutely flex-free performance from the soles.

The buckle system has been improved for 2005. The M5 Carbon has one SMC2 ratcheting buckle -- a simpler and easier-to-use design than the Index buckle used on the 2004 Silex -- plus two Velcro straps. Fine-tuning the pressure of the upper of your shoe is a cinch.

Beyond the lightness of the M5 Carbon is its toughness, softness and custom-like fit. Its upper is built with Giardini Micro Fiber -- a serious upgrade in our minds over the use of real leather. Why Giardini Micro? The first reason is durability. No sport is tougher on equipment than cycling -- the endless hours of exposure to the worst elements mother nature can dish out puts huge demands on your gear. Giardini Micro has been proven to provide substantially more resistance to weather and exposure-related wear than leather. This toughness doesn't come at the expense of heaviness or rigidity -- in fact Giardini Micro is 1/3 lighter than leather (helping the M5 Carbon hit that 285g weight), and it's substantially softer than leather thanks to the fact that the Micro fibers are free to move in the tiny spaces that separate them.

Some other notes about the Micro fabric: It does not stretch. It will maintain its "like new" dimensions forever. If the shoes feel perfect the first time you put them on, you can rest assured they'll feel that way over the long haul. And you can have confidence that your M5 Carbons will last for countless thousands of miles due to the fact that the Micro fabric is similar to leather in the precision with which it can be cut during construction, the way in which the stitching will hold, and the exceptional grip it can attain with the sole. Precision construction equals long-term durability. And just like the best-quality leathers, Micro is porous to allow vapor and air to come through for breathability, but the exterior is treated for complete waterproofness. And from an aesthetic standpoint the grain won't peel or crack, so your shoes will look like a million bucks for a long time to come.
